I got fired from a job.
How do I address this with a potential employer? Here are some steps to follow:
1. Use a phrase such as, “I was let go,” or “We parted ways.” Then explain.
2. Be honest, but not expansive. For instance: “I don’t believe my relationship with my manager was a strong as it could have been. Knowing that my manager will have regular meetings/will be in the office more often/etc. will help engagement and improve teamwork.” OR “The job was not working out, and my boss and I agreed that my talents lie elsewhere.”
3. Then, move to a forward-looking statement, something like: “The great part is that your company’s mission aligns with my values, and I am excited about working for you.” OR “I am grateful that I now have (or had) a chance to explore jobs that better fit my qualifications. I believe this opportunity is a great fit. Would you like to hear more about my skills?”
4. Never, ever blame anyone.
